Rihanna killed the “I Heart Radio” Awards! And did so wearing Lil’ Kim’s “Crush on You” coat and boots, En Vogue’s dress from the “Hold On” video, and exiting Ms. Diana Ross’s helicopter from her Super Bowl performance cuz’ she is all the icons and all the things! In Rihanna’s on words “Don’t Act Like You Forgot!” I live!!! Can’t wait for the new album and for those #Dior ads since she’s the new spokesmodel! Here’s hoping Dior has her check ready. I wouldn’t play games with Riri’s coinTs!
The fashion successes in the Oscars redcarpet were plentiful (thank goodness!). Here are our six “Glamourtunists of the Night,” beginning with Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, and Felicity Jones.
Lupita Nyong’o is officially the overall ruler of the red carpet. She NEVER gets it wrong. Never! I know this may bring up some curse where she may be doomed for every red carpet forever now, but she has given us enough to love forever in my book. This custom gown, embroidered with 6,000 pearls, was made by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein. It was the dress of the night and eclipses even the fabulous powder blue Prada she wore last year, which was memorable in its own right. David Oyelowo wore a wine colored custom tux by Dolce and Gabbana. This was by far one of the best looks of the night worn by a male or female, and one of the best I’ve ever seen worn by a male on the red carpet in my decades of watching the #Oscars. And finally, Felicity Jones stunned the world in this fabulous Alexander McQueen gown by Sarah Burton. The color appears silver but photographed various colors on the red carpet and all looked beautiful. The bodice is so intricately placed and ornate. It was a wow moment for sure.
Our final trio of “Glamourtunists of the Night” are Eddie Redmayne, Emma Stone, and Faith Hill. Eddie Redmayne chose a wonderful color that made what could have been another dull #tuxedo a great look. Plus he is super handsome. Emma Stone wowed in a divine chartreuse Elie Saab. It perfectly matched her hair. And Faith Hill looked so sexy and #fashion forward in a fierce J Mendel gown and new haircut. My fave detail was the string of diamonds that followed the plunging neckline on the gown.
We have six “Scene Stealers” from the Oscars red carpet, meaning all were wonderful and almost stole the show from everyone, including those we name best of the night. The “Scene Stealers” are: America Ferrera, Katie Cassidy, Chrissy Teigen, Jennifer Lopez, Georgina Chapman, and representing for the men, John Legend! We’ll take these three at a time.
America Ferrera, Katie Cassidy and Chrissy Teigen are all on that list for me. They looked fantastic, elegant, and gorgeous. Teigen has worn Zuhair Murad much of this red carpet season, and ends it on a high note. Katie Cassidy was scene stealing this whole awards season, while America Ferrera always looks so beautiful and I wish we saw more of her at these events.
Our final three Oscars “Scene Stealers” are Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab, Georgina Chapman in Marchesa and the always dapper and debonair John Legend. Some said JLo had on the same dress as Robert Duvall’s wife. However, the dresses, while similar and lovely on both, were not both made by Elie Saab. Jennifer Lopez looked great. I liked that she went for a different moment than her usual role as sexiest on the #redcarpet and chose the Oscars to do it. Georgina Chapman looks splendid. I love everything about his gown, especially the gold leaf embroidery. And John Legend was one of my fave males on the Oscars red carpet last night.
We here at Glamourtunist are of a charitable nature. Before you end up on the list of “Missed Glamourtunity” offenders we fire some warning shots. So, Cate Blanchett, Kerry Washington, and Gina Rodriguez … here is your warning and below are our reasons why.
These are three actresses I love, but who’s fashion needs to step it up. I say citations because the looks aren’t horrible, but because they are slipping from great in some cases and just are repeatedly boring in others. All three are talented, smart, and beautiful, but here is the issue. Cate Blanchett is usually winning in the red carpet but last night she showed up looking so damn basic in this black dress. Yes, the necklace is beautiful and the fit of the dress is impeccable, but you must give us more for fashion dear heart. Her stylists should have thought about how common this would look in photographs. The same for Gina Rodriguez, who is a repeat offender in a similar way. Her dresses always look beautiful, but they are doing nothing for fashion or for her lovely figure. Step it up! And Kerry Washington was also always a favorite in the red carpet, but the last few times at these big events she has left much to be desired. She was overheard on red carpet saying how she wanted it to be no fuss and easy. Sweety, this is the Oscars. Bring the fuss or stay home. She has so much more style than this.
Six celebs had a Missed Glamourtunity on the Oscars red carpet are Chloe Moretz, Lorelei Linklater, Will.i.Am, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jared Leto, and Zoe Saladana. Let’s discuss Moretz, Linklater, and Will.i.Am first.
Chloe Moretz was in Miu Miu. The dress was fit poorly in the bodice and their is way too much fabric on the bottom. The pose she went for on the red carpet didn’t help because it only expanded what already looked like a blanket at was awkward. Her hair also looked undone and not in an effortless chic way. Lorelei Linklater is on our worst dressed list for the second time this award’s season. While this Gabriela Cadena gown is an improvement from her look at the SAGs, it isn’t working. The bottom is poorly fit. Her leg looks awkward sticking out as it does and the print on the bodice and side panel of the bottom half of the garment is confusing. Her hair also looks really thin and thirsty. I do like the edgy #styling with the jewelry, shoe, red lip and earring. Finally Will.I.Am. Worst of the worst. Sir, you tried it! Or better yet, you didn’t. This jailhouse train conductor hybrid look was too casual, too strange, and just an insult to the red carpet. For someone so creative and supposedly into fashion, you gave us no fashion or style to speak of last night, darling. No good. And now for Paltrow, Leto, and Saldana.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair and make-up are lovely, as are the earrings. But the Ralph Russo Couture gown is just the wrong color for her skin tone. In another color and without the flower (especially in that color) which looks so gaudy and without purpose, it may have worked. Jared Leto was having a wonderful awards season on the #redcarpet, but he got to the Oscars and just said “aww, f- it.” The color of this suit and the white shirt and tie with the pale pink flower lapel pin looks like a #nightmare Easter suit from the 60s. And I just don’t get the white shoes at all. A clunky mess. And lastly, Zoe Saldana in Atelier Versace. This is a dress that doesn’t know what it wants to be, and the spaghetti straps are giving me a 90s bridesmaid dress effect. I am not a fan of the spiral curls which also look very old too. I also don’t think the color works for her beautiful complexion either. Usually these three are all at the top of any fashion lovers list of red carpet winners, but not this time around.
The Grammys “Glamourtunists of the Night” best dressed are three women who shut the carpet all the way down to the ground. The legendary Jane Fonda in green and gold Balmain jumpsuit. Mother Jane is serving us hair, body, hollywood glamour and all we need in life. She’s about to have me track down some old Jane Fonda workout videos because I need to look this damn #Fierce in my 70s too. Werk !!! Gwen Stefani wins the whole evening for me in this black Atelier Versace jumpsuit. The bodice is so special and ornate, and the make-up and hair is so minimal and clean. She looked flawless head to toe. Best of the night. And finally, Zendaya was stunning on the red carpet with her new pixie cut and a multicolor striped Vivienne Westwood gown with a high, high slit. I literally screamed in delight when I caught a glimpse of her on the television.
Scene stealers are the folk who looked amazing and have us all talking because they were so flawless on the Grammys red carpet. First I loved Ciara in a black Alexandre Vauthier right off the runway at the recent couture shows in Paris. Taylor Swift in an Elie Saab that was both sexy and demure at the same time. Lastly, Kim Kardashian West in a Jean Paul Gaultier, also straight off the runway from the recent Paris couture shows.
Men killed the red carpet at the Grammys last night. The personal style, tailoring, accessories and made the men of music much more interesting than their male actor counterparts. Ne-Yo looked very dapper but also hip. I love the lapel pin he is sporting and the hat. I’m not a fan of sunglasses in doors for people. It always looks like you’re trying too hard to be like “I’m a celeb.” Otherwise, one of the best dressed men of the night. Aloe Blacc’s look is tailored to perfection. I think he had on some of the most fab shoes of the night, while Nick Jonas showed up super sexy strutting in the red carpet in thjs plaid suit. I didn’t really love the sneakers, but it’s not bad either. And can I say again how same hot he is. Sheesh!
Missed Glamourtunity offenders on the Grammys red carpet, meaning worst dressed, are Madonna, Charlie XCX and Helen Lasichanh (model and partner to Pharrell Williams). Madonna straight up wore a costume on the red carpet. Yes, it was Givenchy, but ma’am this ain’t Halloween. And you can’t see from this photo, but her ass was all out. Mother Madge, we know you still sexy and serving up fierceness in your 50s, but you must give us something more for fashion, dear heart. You too legendary for gimmicks. Charli XCX arrived dressed as a performer on one of those shows you see at amusement parks or family cruises. I’m always here for a Le Smoking suit moment a’ la’ Yves Saint Laurent, but it needs to be well fit, well accessorized and give beauty on make-up and hair. None of that is happening here. I also say lose the dreadful fur pelt darling. Lastly, Helen. You didn’t even try. This takes the athletic wear as evening trend too far. Yes, you have body for days, but the hair and the attire look way too casual. Also, she and Pharrell Williams must stop the couples dressing alike thing. It’s corny.
We have eight, EIGHT “Glamourtunists of the Night” at the SAG Awards. Here they are no no particular order.
Marisa Fumero in an elegant blue and black gown, kept young by her slicked back do and make-up. Julianne Moore is getting her second “Glamourtunist of the Night” of the awards season (she killed it at the Golden Globes too), again wearing custom Givenchy. Clearly Givenchy works really well for her, and it’ll be interesting to see if she wears them to accept what looks like will be (finally!!!) an Oscar win for “Still Alice.”
Our next three SAG Awards “Glamourtunists of the Night.” Julianna Margulies shut the red carpet down in this blue Giambattista Valli. Jared Leto is my favorite man of the awards season. He always gives us something beyond s basic black tuxedo like other guys on the red carpet, and he gets it right. And he also works in interesting hair and accessories from time to time too, such as his pink flower lapel pin, pinks socks, and the buckle on his shoes here. And last, but not least, Danielle Brooks of “Orange Is the New Black” was stunning in a navy Christian Siriano. Her hair is particularly delicious giving elegance and glamour. Love!
Our final trio of “Glamourtunists of the Night” are Jennifer Aniston, redeeming herself from that horrid Golden Globes look, looking so sexy, stylish, and youthful at the SAG Awards in this smoking hot vintage John Galliano. I was so happy to see her in a color other than black, dark blue, or her other usuals. Reese Witherspoon killed it in a white Armani. She looks amazing. And Ethan Hawke gave Jared Leto a run for his money in an olive green Calvin Klein suit. I loved seeing a different color for men’s wear in the red carpet from him. And he’s just as handsome as ever.
