Loving Jessica Chastain’s complete style transformation on the cover of the November W Magazine styled by Edward Enninful and photographed by Steven Klein. The fashion editorial inside the magazine is equally stunning and appropriately titled “Transformer,” as clearly evidenced in the beauty look Chastain wears on the cover and in the editorial. I literally had to look multiple times and then check the name on the cover to even recognize her. Fabulous!
Empire star, the incredible Taraji P Henson was photographed au naturale in gorgeous cornrows, by legendary fashion photographer Bruce Weber for latest issue of the Carine Roitfeld’s magazine, CR Fashion Book. Generally, Henson is photographed and filmed wearing a wig or weave. This photo reminds me of vintage photos of another powerhouse Black actress, the incomparable Cicely Tyson. Tyson has said in interviews how personally imperative it was for her to be photographed with her natural hair and to wear it as such in particular roles back in the day.
Chile’ Rafael Nadal is serving on more than the tennis court. Can somebody say body-ody-ody? *fans self* I’ll take two pair, please. Tommy Hilfiger got it right. Now can we have one with one of my celebrity husbands who is also an athlete, the oh so fine Michael Strahan?
Now THIS chil’ren is what my Mama’s generation would call, in the words of The Commodores, a “Brickhouse.” Serena Williams covers the NY Magazine Fashion Issue.
Lupita Nyong’o stuns in Maison Margiela at the Paris Couture shows last week! Get it girl! She is still the reigning overall queen of the red carpet. Just gorgeous!
“I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again… But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about her body might be inspiring for some folks. There’s a beauty in the things we think are imperfect. It sounds very cliché, but its true.” – Laverne Cox on her photo in the new Allure magazine which features five actresses posed nude in an editorial. Laverne is beautiful, amazing, trailblazing and spot on with her assessment imposed aesthetic hierarchies she speaks of with regards to representations (or lack thereof) of transgender women and Black women and I just adore her, and I appreciate that she acknowledged the difficult decision making involved in deciding whether or not to do the shoot given all of the historical, political, and representational stakes for Black and transgender women. And kudos to Allure for this important intervention.
Deeda Blair, among the grandest of the socialites that fashion critic Robin Givhan writes about in “Battle of Versailles.” She is serving us legendary status in this photo! I need a Town and Country Magazine story on her like the one they did on Bunny Mellon immediately! She’s glorious!
Happiness looks good on you Mama Knowles! Tina Knowles, mother of Beyonce and Solange, just married actor Richard Lawson, father of actress Bianca Lawson. I’m also a big fan of Lawson from his days on “All My Children” which I used to sneak and watch when I was a kid, and his daughter is on “Teen Wolf” which I am addicted to as well (don’t judge me!). I noticed that mama Knowles, Beyonce and Solange each had their guests all wear white to their wedding as did the bride (and groom in Solange and Mama Tina’s case). I love this because it shows a confident bride who is gonna stand out and snatch trophies regardless, so she don’t need to be the only one in a white dress to slay us! But she looks good in this Romona Keveza gown. Congrats to the lovely couple who are both looking quite sexy I might add, and who I am confident will not end up being written a letter from your truly on “Unsolicited: Celebrity Therapy.” Proving as Bevy Smith always says: “it gets greater, later!”
Rihanna killed the “I Heart Radio” Awards! And did so wearing Lil’ Kim’s “Crush on You” coat and boots, En Vogue’s dress from the “Hold On” video, and exiting Ms. Diana Ross’s helicopter from her Super Bowl performance cuz’ she is all the icons and all the things! In Rihanna’s on words “Don’t Act Like You Forgot!” I live!!! Can’t wait for the new album and for those #Dior ads since she’s the new spokesmodel! Here’s hoping Dior has her check ready. I wouldn’t play games with Riri’s coinTs!
This Barney’s New York official spring 2015 ad campaign features fashion model legends like Christie Brinkley, Pat Cleveland, and Bethann Hardison, and it is fabulous. Above, Pat Cleveland and Bethann Hardison are showing us how you chew the scenery in a photograph, dear hearts! They personify elegance and excellence in all things. And below we have “uptown girl” Christie Brinkley, looking gorgeous as always.
All three of these women are showing, in the words of friend in my head and fashion legend Bevy Smith says, “it gets greater, later!”
