I’m feeling the new SWV single “Ain’t No Man” that dropped on NYC radio. It’s giving me a 90s r&b realness I have been missing. I’m here for it! Plus, I love me some Lelee, Taj, and Coko. I watch their reality show from time to time, and it is interesting to see a legendary r&b group attempt to sort out old wounds and mount a comeback. Well, they are well on their way. Congratulations ladies, and welcome back!
Oprah posed as Glinda the Good Witch from “The Wizard of Oz” in the latest ‘Icons’ issue of Harper’s Bazaar and styled by the legendary Carine Roitfeld, and photographed by Jean-Paul Goude. Divine, like Glinda!
The issue featured a number of other celebrities posed as icons, including Katy Perry as Elizabeth Taylor as styled in an Andy Warhol portrait, Rose Huntington-Whiteley as Diana Vreeland, Jessica Chastain as a very elegantly dressed Joan of Arc, and one of my favorites, Willow Smith as the Hindu Goddess Kali!
“I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again… But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about her body might be inspiring for some folks. There’s a beauty in the things we think are imperfect. It sounds very cliché, but its true.” – Laverne Cox on her photo in the new Allure magazine which features five actresses posed nude in an editorial. Laverne is beautiful, amazing, trailblazing and spot on with her assessment imposed aesthetic hierarchies she speaks of with regards to representations (or lack thereof) of transgender women and Black women and I just adore her, and I appreciate that she acknowledged the difficult decision making involved in deciding whether or not to do the shoot given all of the historical, political, and representational stakes for Black and transgender women. And kudos to Allure for this important intervention.
Happiness looks good on you Mama Knowles! Tina Knowles, mother of Beyonce and Solange, just married actor Richard Lawson, father of actress Bianca Lawson. I’m also a big fan of Lawson from his days on “All My Children” which I used to sneak and watch when I was a kid, and his daughter is on “Teen Wolf” which I am addicted to as well (don’t judge me!). I noticed that mama Knowles, Beyonce and Solange each had their guests all wear white to their wedding as did the bride (and groom in Solange and Mama Tina’s case). I love this because it shows a confident bride who is gonna stand out and snatch trophies regardless, so she don’t need to be the only one in a white dress to slay us! But she looks good in this Romona Keveza gown. Congrats to the lovely couple who are both looking quite sexy I might add, and who I am confident will not end up being written a letter from your truly on “Unsolicited: Celebrity Therapy.” Proving as Bevy Smith always says: “it gets greater, later!”
Rihanna killed the “I Heart Radio” Awards! And did so wearing Lil’ Kim’s “Crush on You” coat and boots, En Vogue’s dress from the “Hold On” video, and exiting Ms. Diana Ross’s helicopter from her Super Bowl performance cuz’ she is all the icons and all the things! In Rihanna’s on words “Don’t Act Like You Forgot!” I live!!! Can’t wait for the new album and for those #Dior ads since she’s the new spokesmodel! Here’s hoping Dior has her check ready. I wouldn’t play games with Riri’s coinTs!
Rihanna is on the cover of the latest I-D Magazine serving you banji girl, box braid, globe sized-hoop earrings, 90s ride or die chick realness. And I’m here for all of it! The Duchess Dutty Wine couldn’t just wait to slay our lives when her new album “R8” will undoubtedly drop, run for a cliff, and take our edges with it!
